Chamber Cleaning

Your Trusted Partner in Sterilization Performance

At the core of every successful sterilization process is reliable, high-performance equipment—and a partner who understands what it takes to keep it that way.

With specialized knowledge of expertise in sterilization practices, we offer more than just equipment. We provide deep insight into the factors that impact sterilizer performance, from routine wear to critical issues like mineral buildup and steam-borne contaminants. Over time, these deposits accumulate on chamber walls, leading to discoloration, decreased heat transfer, and an increased risk of re-contaminating sterilized packs.

Our proactive service approach is designed to prevent these issues before they compromise your process. Through expert diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and targeted cleaning solutions, we help ensure:

  • Consistent sterilizer performance

  • Reduced downtime and costly repairs

  • Full compliance with AAMI and AORN guidelines

  • The safety and sterility of every load

Trust us to protect your process—because what’s inside the chamber matters.

Chamber Cleaning Strategy

To maintain optimal performance and regulatory compliance, steam sterilizers should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. However, based on your sterilization volume and the quality of incoming steam, more frequent cleanings—semi-annually or quarterly—may be necessary, as recommended by Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).

Incorporating Chamber Cleaning into your regular maintenance schedule helps preserve the integrity of your sterilization process. Available for both STERIS and non-STERIS sterilizers, this service delivers:

  • Effective removal of mineral and contaminant buildup on chamber walls

  • Enhanced heat transfer and drying performance

  • Improved chamber appearance and cleanliness

  • Minimal operational disruption, allowing nearby equipment to remain in use

  • Reduced risk of contamination and rejected sterilization loads

  • Easier day-to-day cleaning for operators

Disclaimer

The information provided in this document/guideline is intended for general purposes only and does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific sterilizer model. Users must always refer to and follow the manufacturer’s user manual and safety instructions when cleaning or maintaining the sterilizer chamber.

To ensure a safe and efficient cleaning process, the sterilizer must be completely cool and powered off, for at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled cleaning appointment. Failure to comply may result in the appointment being rescheduled, and additional charges may apply. Please refer to Section 7, 10 & 19 of the Terms and Conditions for full details.

The cleaning process begins with a general inspection of the sterilizer chamber, focusing on identifying any visible signs of wear, corrosion, or structural issues. Following the initial inspection, technicians proceed with the manual removal of the rack weldment assembly, including the retaining tubes and screws.

⚠️ Important Notice: Over time, the screws securing the racks in Eagle, Century and 400 AMSCO sterilizers often become severely corroded—in some cases rusted to the point of breaking during removal or becoming impossible to extract without damaging the surrounding structure. Please refer to section 11&15 of Terms and Conditions.

If corrosion is extensive, technicians may determine that continuing the removal process could pose a high risk of damage to the chamber or internal components. In such cases, technicians may determine that it is not advisable to proceed with full removal of the rack weldment assembly. Instead, the service may be limited to cleaning only the accessible, open areas of the chamber to avoid causing further damage and either replace the entire rack weldment assembly or, in extreme cases, consider full replacement of the sterilizer unit.

To ensure safe and effective restoration, we highly recommend replacing the full-rack weldment assembly with new components. This step is critical and requires precision, patience, and the proper tools to avoid complications and preserve the structural integrity of the sterilizer chamber. Careful handling during this phase lays the foundation for successful cleaning, safe reassembly, and long-term reliability of your sterilization equipment.

Once the racks are safely removed, a pre-scrubbing phase is performed using specialized sanding equipment to remove surface deposits and prepare the chamber for chemical treatment. This is followed by a cleaning process using CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover), a proven chemical solution designed to dissolve mineral buildup. Once the scrubbing phase is complete and chamber surfaces have been properly descaled, the next step is the reassembly of the rack weldment, using new or restored components as needed to ensure structural integrity and safe operation.

⚠️ Important: During cleaning and maintenance procedures, it is normal for water or chemical residue to be present on or around the work area. While all reasonable precautions are taken to maintain a safe environment, wet surfaces may pose a slip hazard. Please refer to section 18 of the Terms and Conditions.

Following reassembly, attention shifts to the inner door surface, including thorough cleaning of the door diaphragm cover. This step is essential to remove any residual buildup and ensure the entire chamber—doors included—meets the required cleanliness and performance standards. These final touches complete the service process, leaving your sterilizer restored, compliant, and ready for reliable operation.

Once the racks are safely removed, technicians begin a pre-scrubbing phase using specialized sanding equipment to eliminate surface deposits and prepare the chamber for chemical treatment.

⚠️ Important: Clients are advised to keep staff and patients clear of the service area during chemical application and for a reasonable period afterward, as recommended by safety data sheets (SDS) for the chemicals used. Please refer to section 16 of the Term and Conditions for full details.

This is followed by a chemical cleaning process using CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover)—a proven solution for dissolving mineral buildup inside the sterilizer chamber. After the initial treatment, a secondary scrubbing phase is performed to remove any remaining deposits, particularly those loosened by the CLR application.

For Century and 400 Series AMSCO sterilizers, an additional cleaning step may be performed using A.M. (Muriatic Acid). This chemical is highly effective for deep descaling and is safe for use on the stainless-steel chamber components of these specific models.

⚠️ Important: Muriatic Acid (A.M.) is not suitable for use on AMSCO Eagle sterilizers. For Eagle models, only CLR is used during the chemical treatment phase to ensure material compatibility and prevent damage.

These cleaning steps are performed with extreme care to ensure effective descaling without compromising the structural integrity of the sterilizer chamber.

Note: Applicable Only to AMSCO Eagle Sterilizers

Following reassembly, special attention is given to the inner door surface, including a thorough cleaning of the door diaphragm cover. This step is essential for removing any residual buildup that may compromise the seal or function of the door components. Ensuring the entire chamber—including the door surfaces—is properly cleaned helps maintain optimal performance, sterilization effectiveness, and compliance with cleanliness standards specific to AMSCO Eagle units.

These final touches complete the service process, leaving your sterilizer restored, compliant, and ready for reliable operation

Important Note & Clarification on Chamber Appearance Post-Cleaning

It is important to understand that the sterilizer chamber will not appear bright or silver after cleaning. In many cases, visible discoloration such as black, green, brown, or yellow stains may remain even after thorough cleaning. Please refer to Section 2 and 17 of the Terms and Conditions for full details.

These stains are most commonly the result of thermal discoloration, caused by the chamber’s exposure to extreme, continuous heat over time.

(The colors, caused by surface oxidation, are an approximate indicator of the temperatures the metal has been exposed to.)

These marks do not necessarily indicate poor cleaning or contamination, but rather the natural wear and discoloration of stainless steel due to prolonged high-temperature use.

Please remember:

  • This is a cleaning service, not a restoration or refinishing process.

  • The chamber will accumulate buildup again through regular sterilizer use.

  • The purpose of this cleaning is to ensure the chamber meets hygiene standards set forth by organizations such as the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), or to meet facility hygiene requirements.

This cleaning supports compliance and operational readiness but does not reverse long-term material discoloration caused by heat or age.
